PJW,
Fair points. I would love for an IRSE section to be started centred on Derby. That would allow specific tailored events including YM seminars/exam-reviews.
Indeed, the study group peetered out. I guess the biggest issue was the niche of attendees where a broader group would be far more beneficial and probably long-standing.

The YM annual seminar in 2011 was Swindon, 2010 London, 2009 York and 2008 in Glasgow and 2007 I think was Birmingham. I have recently suggested the possibility of Manchester for 2012 and I think this may be given serious consideration.
The Exam Review continues (even without the pub) until 19:30 ish; realistically trains continue out of London far later into the evening than out of other places so I don't see much possibility of moving this particular event anywhere else particularly as need also to persuade examiners to attend. I suppose city centre Birmingham might be an option, but as far as I know there hasn't been an active Study Group in the city for a decade to form a nucleus and help organise it- perhaps it is "chicken and egg", yet I got the feeling that the group started in Derby last year wasn't in the end sustainable....

As an aside, not meaning to hijack the thread, it would be useful for more YM events/reviews etc., to be held in the Midlands, North or further afield. I realise something was attempted a few years ago and numbers were lower but that would be expected. The exam events mostly have decent turn-outs.
